I was privileged to be able to spend my evening with representatives from the Children's Aid Society today. And while the discussion had several focal points, there was some extended conversation about what shared leadership means.
So I ask, what does does shared leadership mean to you? How does it show up in your practice daily?
To me shared leadership is the element of the working relationship between the Community School Director/Coordinator and the school principal/school leadership as it relates to schoolwide decision making. In my school I meet with the principal, deans, theme coach, instructional coach and other school leaders on a weekly basis. We strategize everything related to student success, operating budget, parental involvement, community/corporate engagement and make final decisions jointly. We do not operate in silos as separate entities residing in the same building. Instead there are very few decisions made within the school without input from lead agency staff, specifically the Community School Director/Coordinator. By operating in this capacity I think it effectively demonstrates what shared leadership looks like and a full integration of the lead agency within the entire school community.
Thank you for the response. It highlights the need for decisions to be global (who is involved in making them and how they benefit multiple areas of a school site community).
Shared leadership to me means listening with the intention to understand. Shared leadership also means that decision making does not rest with one person. In my opinion demonstration of shared leadership lies in the outcomes of the decision making process and whether all stakeholders whom those decisions effect are involved in that process. In short, student and family voice need to be a part of the equation.
