Greetings all, I am brand new on the network, but after looking around, I find it pretty much helpful. Wondering if some of you can provide some input and ideas on this matter, I have been the CSC at my school for the past 6 months, and have noticed how the structure regarding attendance is not well established, this is something not only my school around the area suffers. I am wondering how other schools handle long absences due to illness, overseas travel, absences for more than 10 days... Any info? Thanks!.

I'm with the Oakland Unified School District and we have a couple of things in play related to long absences. I like to make use of the Independent Studies Contract for consecutive absences between 5-20 days. Parents, teachers, administration, and the student sign the contract and teachers provide the work for the time gone. Once the work is graded I can update their attendance to a positive code. You of course would need to know in advance they are planning to be out for vacation etc. For students who are in the hospital I try to initiative our district's Home and Hospital program; with this program students are able to get their work assigned from a teacher from central office and who can function as a liaison between the hospital or home and the school.
I also try to make myself familiar with my board policy related to attendance so that I know the base standards are.
