What do you want to know about chronic absence?

Thank you to all the Coordinators who took our Network Survey to help us plan for future Network activities. In response to the 84.8% of Coordinators who said they would like to learn more about chronic absence, we will begin planning a series of webinars for the new year to focus on the many different barriers and strategies to increase attendance.

To help us with planning, tell us what chronic absence issues you are facing. Do your students face transportation issues, have chronic asthma, or mental health issues keeping them from coming to school? Comment below with the challenges your school faces!

Disengaged parents, disengaged students, anxiety, students skipping certain blocks/classes, teachers not understanding their role in attendance, parental mental health, student mental health.

Transportation issues!  Also, districts that have very restrictive and specific guidelines in order to qualify for bussing.

Agreed. It's a long list of reasons why students chronically absent, but what suggestions does anyone have for making improvements? Our District has a "Strive for Less than 5" (days absent) Initiative and promote this through Teachers and Faculty, but the message is difficult to spread to parents/caregivers.  Some incentives are for students to receive 'points" for perfect attendance an entire week, and with a total of combined points in each class together, they earn prizes. They can include an extra 15 minutes of play time outside, a try of nutritious snacks/drinks, a free book from the "reading rack", and of course, the accolades from Teacher and Principal, and for being the 'winning class'!!
